Dr Walkington has been a wonderful collaborator and friend of talkSTEM since before our first Pi Day Math Festival in March, 2017. We are thrilled that she included this video of how to create a math walk as an example of an easy, fun, and rich family activity that can be done at home during the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond. We hope that many children and families will be inspired by her video and will create their own math walks at home or in their neighborhoods. At talkSTEM, we are happy and grateful that Dr Walkington has been interested in our work and played a significant role in research done on our initiatives over the last few years. It all started back in March, 2017 at our very first Pi Day Math Festival in the Dallas Arts District. The 2 minute video below was also produced by SMU and you can see Dr Walkington in this video.
Thanks to Drs Walkington and her colleague, Dr Wilhelm, our walkSTEM initiative was studied during that kickoff year in 2017. They studied the impact on student learning of our docent-led math walks (or walkSTEM tours) in the Arts District that talkSTEM conducted on the first Saturday of each month in 2017. They analyzed results, wrote, and presented a paper at the Annual Conference for the American Educational Research Association in 2018.
I first met Dr Walkington in 2015. I had just founded talkSTEM and came across her work on personalized learning in math and found it fascinating. I reached out to her and that resulted in a 2-part blog post about her work in this area. You can read about her work in this area here and here.
At talkSTEM, we collaborate with several researchers and academics from STEM, arts, and education fields and we throughly enjoy partnering with them on research and content creation. Dr Walkington is an example of one of our earliest collaborators and we thank her from the bottom of our hearts. Dr. Koshi Dhingra has dedicated her career to STEM education and is passionate about having every child live up to their potential. Seeing a lack of girls and other underrepresented youth in STEM programs, she founded talkSTEM in 2015 to address the imbalance. She has a doctorate in science education from Teachers College, Columbia University, has years of experience teaching in graduate and undergraduate programs, and has held leadership roles in universities. She advises and collaborates with a broad range of educational institutions globally. Dr. Dhingra began her career teaching science in middle and high school in New York. She lives in Dallas, Texas with her husband, three children, and two dogs.
